There are many different types of reasons why it can happen to an individual, however, the most common notable reasons comes from dental plaque that has been left uncleaned for 2-3 weeks. Other possible causes of gingivitis includes examples such as, medication (that may include swelling of the gums), hormonal (puberty, pregnancy, menstrual), diabetes and several systemic diseases. PERIODONTITIS

PERIODONTITIS are similar to gingivitis, but with the inclusion of inflammation in the hard bone tissue and periodontal ligaments. Receding gums, loss of bone support and loose teeth, are common clinical manifestations that are seen.

HOW ARE PLAQUE FORMED. There are over 530 difference species of microbes that are identified in the oral cavity, and most of the time, they are in harmony and do not cause disease. However, these bacteria tend to form plaques on the teeth surface, and there needs to be a good practice of Oral Hygiene to maintain this balance, to avoid Plaque Induced Gingivitis. These plaque and be reproduced in the matter of hours to days, hence, it’s imperative to maintain good oral hygiene practice, which we will be elaborating later.

AREAS THAT NEED TO PUT MORE ATTENTION:

  • Supra- and subgingival calculus

  • Cementoenamel junctions and enamel projections

  • Furcation entrances and irregularities

  • Tooth fissures and grooves

  • Cervical and root surface caries

  • Crowding of teeth in the arch.

WHAT HAPPENS IF GINGIVITIS IS LEFT UNTREATED. These plaque can cause tooth decay, from the acidic produced from the bacteria. Even worse, it may lead to periodontitis that can affect the stability of the teeth, through the destruction of the bone and gums around the tooth, leading to loose teeth that may require extractions.

HOW DO WE AVOID PLAQUE TO FORM?

  1. Have a good diet: Try to avoid sugary drinks and sticky food

  2. Have a good hygiene:

    • Tooth brushes, electric tooth brushes are more effective in maintaining hygiene, and they come in both the oscillating tooth brushes like Vitality from Oral B or Philips Ultrasonic Toothbrushes

    • String Tooth Floss, Interdental Brushes and Water Flossers are necessary to help clean the in between of the teeth, for better hygiene.
